Ben Affleck stars in The Accountant as a man with autism and lots of secrets, as well as extraordinary math skills and an impressive arsenal of weapons. The once and future Batman is the titular role in the new thriller from Gavin O’Connor (Warrior, Jane Got A Gun). According to The Playlist, the film follows Christian Wolff (Affleck), “a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people,” which is presumably how he’s able to balance being a CPA with his extralegal bookkeeping for “some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations.”
J.K. Simmons’ Treasury Department agent is soon hot on his tail, though, so Wolff decides to lie low and take on a legitimate client—and that’s where the trouble starts. Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, John Lithgow, and Jeffrey Tambor are along for the ride as well, really stacking up the talent portion of the film. It’ll be interesting to see how well O’Connor can play up the human factors of Wolff’s autism (and hopefully not just make him a “magical” savant) while also keeping the thriller elements engaging. The trailer does a good job of making the whole thing seem like a tightening noose, with repeated shots and the puzzle piece motif, while agents start to close in on the accountant with all of the information. Plus it always helps to get a little back-up from Radiohead to hammer home that paranoia feeling.
The Accountant opens in the U.S. on October 14.
