Has The Conjuring sneakily kick-started a “cinematic universe” of its own? The ghost-hunting exploits of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren may not be the most likely source for a cross-movie franchise, but The Conjuring 2 marks the third time their research has been culled to scare the shit out of audiences in the past three years. The 2013 film, a true throwback in more ways then one, was “supremely effective,” its success inspiring the cheap spin-off Annabelle (which apparently has a sequel of its own planned for next year). Luckily, this summer’s sequel is a proper follow-up from modern horror maestro James Wan, putting Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Warrens front and center as they try to protect a defenseless family from evil spirits.
The Conjuring 2 hits theaters natinwide on June 10, but The A.V. Club and Warner Bros. Pictures have an opportunity for you to see it for free on Monday, June 6.
