The latest trailer for Luc Besson’s Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets—which The A.V. Club had a chance to see in 3D in New York earlier this week—gives a broad look at of the universe the director built, and outlines the mission for the heroes. Alpha, the titular city, is a “paradise” where species live in harmony. However, an “unknown force” is now causing trouble. And, thus, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and his partner Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are deployed to stop it in less than 10 hours. Over the course of their adventure they encounter Rihanna, who can magically change into a sexy nurse outfit, and a whole bunch of aliens. According to Besson, this only scratches the surface. “We can do a trailer in June with nothing that you have seen already, and be totally new,” he told reporters at a breakfast.

Before the trailer screened, DeHaan mentioned: “Every time I see it it, it’s like I’m seeing it for the first time because so much of what we filmed was in front of blue screen.” Indeed, Besson explained just how high tech Valerian is compared to his The Fifth Element. “The Fifth Element has 188 shots with special effects,” he said. “This one has 2,734.” Valerian is due out July 21.
