The first trailer for Terrence Malick’s long-awaited Voyage Of Time is here

Imagine Tree Of Life, but without all that stuff with the kid and the abusive father and whatever it was that Sean Penn was doing. Just take those scenes of cosmic imagery and numinous voyeurism and then expand them, both figuratively and literally. Make them 40 minutes long and 50 feet high. That’s pretty much exactly what we can expect from Terrence Malick’s new IMAX quasi-documentary Voyage Of Time. The impressively ambitious montage of imagery and music will purportedly tell the story of our universe, from its cacophonous outset to its inevitable denouement, taking time to weave in the circuitous genetic pathway of a carbon-based life form that arose from the chaos.

With photography by Paul Atkins (Tree Of Life, BBC’s Earth), a score by Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight, Once Upon A Time In The West), and narration from Brad Pitt, it looks like a project to behold. There will eventually be an alternative 35mm feature-length version of the film narrated by Cate Blanchett as well.
