Once seemingly more a rumor than a film, Paul Thomas Anderson’s on-again/off-again/on-again The Master has been leaving Bigfoot-like hints of its existence across the Internet since May, when a tiny image first surfaced. A generous clip featuring star Joaquin Phoenix followed and now a second clip, this one offering the first look at Philip Seymour Hoffman as L. Ron Hubbard “a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, [and] theoretical philosopher” has surfaced on The Weinstein Company’s YouTube page. It’s promising-looking, features another creepy sampling of Jonny Greenwood’s score, and ends with Phoenix yelling, possibly because he’s haunted by past failures that can only be cured by Scientology philosophical concepts invented by Hoffman’s character.
